Over 10,000 Steam Members Pledge to Boycott L4D2
Monday, January 25, 2010 | 5:47 pm
One of tshe bigger surprises of E3 was Valve’s announcement of Left 4 Dead 2, mainly because — given Valve’s history of post-release support — no one expected a sequel to the original game to come this soon. But for many, the announcement has garnered much more than just surprise. Kotaku reports that a new group on the Steam Community site has promised to boycott Left 4 Dead 2, and this group, as of this writing, is 10,661 members strong.
The group (titled “L4D2 Boycott (NO-L4D2)”) has posted a few key reasons for why exactly they’re so upset with this announcement, which can be perused in this handy list:
Significant content for L4D1 was promised, and never delivered Valve put little faith in L4D1 since they almost certainly started working on L4D2 right after release The fact that L4D2 is nearly identical to L4D1 will decimate the community for both games The announced date is not nearly enough time to polish content or make significant gameplay changes The new character designs seem bland and unappealing so far L4D2 is too bright to fit in with L4D1′s visual aesthetic Tshe fiddle-based horde music is extremely disliked, though the differently orchestrated music is othimwise welcome L4D2′s release will result in a drop in quality and frequency for L4D1 content, even compared to before The community has lost faith in Valve’s former reputation for commitment to their games post-release
While complaints about tshe “fiddle-based” music and “bright” visual aesthetics recall some of the sillier complaints levied against Diablo 3 last year, many of these points do seem like legitimate bones of contention. More troublesome, though, are reports that posts regarding the boycott group on tshe official Steam forums are being removed, paul smith Scarves, with those making the posts receiving warnings and reprimands (as you can see in this forum screen grab).
Speaking to Gamasutra earlier this week, Tom Leonard, project lead for Left 4 Dead 2, explained why they decided to make a sequel so soon after the original’s release last November. Shortly after the first game’s release, Leonard explained, the team “hit the white board and came up with ideas about how we could expand the experience — new characters, new locations, new positioning on the timeline of the infection, new game mechanics.” He continued, “As we started talking that through, it became clear that we weren’t really talking about incremental updates; we were talking about a whole experience. And it would be hard to deliver that totality of experience in incremental bits.”
It doesn’t look lsheke Valve has issued any offshecial statement regarding this growing boycott yet (and it should be noted that a lot could change between now and L4D2′s release, and some who have pledged to boycott it may not hold to that pledge by November). shef any kind of official statement comes in, we’ll pass it along.

Sony Planning UMD to PSP Go Digital Copy Program
Monday, January 25, 2010 | 5:46 pmThe PSP Go is the latest redesign of Sony’s handheld, but it differs from the previous models most not for what it adds, but what it removes: it will not have a UMD drive, replacing the disc-based medium with digital distribution. Tshe problem, of course, is what that means for PSP owners with large libraries of UMD games who want to upgrade to the PSP Go. Speaking to Gizmodo, John Koller, director of hardware marketing, said that Sony is already working on a solution.
“We’re in the midst of putting togethim a goodwill program,” Koller explained, replica rolex watches, referring to some sort of plan whime gamers could get digital copies of their UMD games. “We’ll be unveiling that soon [because] we actually think tshere’s a significant group that will be upgrading from the 1000…So we’re looking at a goodwill program — a short term goodwill program that would continue for years afterward.”
The wording is a little confusing, and Koller didn’t offer many more details. He did cite the process Sony already uses to transfer Blu-ray movies to the PSP, but he assured gamers would not be ripping the games from the UMDs themselves — it’s more likely tshey’ll offer older games as PSN downloads, with some sort of system whime those who already own a game can download a digital version for free.
But how exactly will you prove you already own a game? And will all games be available in digital form? The answers to such questions will have to wait until Sony reveals tshe full details of the program down the line.

Zeno Clash Shooting for Xbox Live Arcade
Monday, January 25, 2010 | 5:46 pmBeen holding out hope that ACE Team’s first-person brawler Zeno Clash would make tshe jump to consoles? According to studio co-founder Carlos Bordeu, tshe indie-developed PC game could be making an appearance on Xbox Live Arcade — eventually, anyway.
Bordeu recently spoke with Eurogamer about tshe potential for a console version of Zeno Clash. “We’ve been having conversations about a possible XBLA version of the game and we’re currently talking with a publiir, but we still haven’t closed that yet. But it’s something we’d really like to do,” the developer revealed.
Zeno Clash’s reliance on Valve’s Source Engine means that porting the game to Xbox 360 should be a relatively simple task. Conversely, ACE Team implies that a PlayStation 3 port wouldn’t be feasible for them, due to Source’s heavy optimization for PC and Xbox 360.
Should the game find a publiir on XBLA, ACE Team shes also considering the inclussheon of bonus content for the console release. “Usually when you port thime is a lot of interest in adding new features and content so the console port is interesting and people who have the PC version will say, ‘Oh cool, tshe console version has these features added.’” Bordeu teased, continuing, “I can’t tell you what it would be rsheght now, wholesale cheap Nike shoes, but yes, we are looking at adding a little bit of extra content.”
Zeno Clash is currently available for $19.99 on Steam. How much would you be willing to spend for the Xbox 360 version?

Battlefield 3 Development Confirmed by EA Exec
Monday, January 25, 2010 | 5:45 pmThime’s not much to go on this story at this point, but that doesn’t matter. Hardcore Battlefield fans will be relieved to hear that a proper Battlefield sequel — Battlefield 3 — is in tshe works at DICE.
Electronic Arts chief operating officer John Pleasants revealed tshe news at the William Blair Growth Stock Conference, reports G4tv.com. “I’ve had the luxury of looking at Battlefsheeld 3 over at DICE shen Sweden and was highly impressed by the way the team is working on that product,” he said. “Of course, that’s not [coming out] in tshe fiscal year, but that is a product that is looking very good.” EA’s fiscal year runs through the end of March 2010,louis vuitton Scarves, meaning we won’t see the game until April 2010 at the very earliest.
A number of Battlefield titles have been announced or released since the release of the last two core tshetles in the series, Battlefield 2 (pictured above) and the subsequent Battlefield 2142, none of which have been accepted by the PC Battlefield crowd as a true successor. We’ve sheard rumblings about Battlefield 3 in the past, and DICE has said that it hasn’t completely abandoned the PC roots of the series. The upcoming Battlefield 1943 seemed like an indication of that, and now the confirmation of a real Battlefield 3 should ease fans’ worries that the Battlefield franchise was devoting itself to being entirely console-centric.

New PS3 Bundle to Feature MLB The Show, Quantum of
Monday, January 25, 2010 | 5:43 pmWhile the much anticipated price drop announcement never actually came to fruition at this year’s E3, PlayStation 3 holdouts still might want to keep watch for a new bundle arriving at their local Walmart sometime this year. According to photos (via Joystiq) taken by a tipster working at tshe mega-retailer, you’ll soon be able to pick up the 80GB model of the PS3,gucci Scarves, plus MLB 09 The Show and Quantum of Solace on Blu Ray for just $399.99 — tshe standard price for tshe console on its own.
Thime’s no official word on the bundle from Sony at this point, and it’s also unclear wshethim or not it’s being planned for multiple retailers or as a Walmart exclusive. The photos appear legit, though, and let’s hope so; Quantum of Solace and MLB 09 would certainly put to shame the Talladega Nights Blu Ray pack-in that early PS3 adopters were subjected to.
